Does Blue Buffalo have more meat than Wellness dog food?
February 7th, 2010
I have my dog on wellness, but her poop is to runny, and I checked the ingredients and there is no by products it rated 5 or 6 stars out 6, but doesn’t have enough meat for a big dog like her. So I was wondering does blue buffalo dog food have more meat is it good quality?
I also took her to the vet because we thought she had worms they tested and she did not
The runny poo problem can’t be due to Wellness not having enough meat. Wellness has more quality meat content than probably 90% of all dog food.
It might be that your dogs digestive system is sensitive to some ingredient(s) in the Wellness. High quality grains are actually sometimes rougher on dogs with sensitive stomachs. Dogs also can develop food allergies.
You could switch to a grain-free formula to see if its the grain, or switch to a 100% or 95% beef formula (like EVO or Before Grain) – to see if its any of the other stuff in the Wellness formula. Those 100%/95% lines also offer things other than beef – if your Wellness formula contains beef then try a 100%/95% of something that your Wellness doesn’t have in it – like Venison, Buffalo, etc.
Just note that the 100% formulas don’t meet AAFCO standards to be used as stand-alone, complete and balanced nutrition for your pet. The 95% formulas do meet the standard.
And of course – you would want to make such a switch gradually, as switching abruptly to a very different food can cause diarreah itself.
But if your dog has persistent diarreah – you really do need to consult a vet.

Different varieties have different meat levels. What variety is she on?

They’re both good foods, but not every food agrees with every dog. If you’ve had a stool test recently to rule out parasites, then gradually switch to a different food & see if things improve.

I don’t like Blue Buffalo too much. I think you should try something like Merrick’s or Orijen or Evo. If you want to, you could add some real ground meat to the Wellness and see if that works. It will make it more healthy for your dog too.

Wellness Core-Crude Protein min. 34%
Blue Buffalo-Chicken and rice-Crude Protein 24.0% min

I have 3 Boerboels, a South African Mastiff, and they love to eat! I have had a lot of luck using Force Dog Food as it is entirely grain-free. It is a raw, dehydrated food that you just add a little water to.
It is made from: USDA chicken, organic flax seed, potatoes, celery, sweet potatoes, apples, alfalfa, organic kelp, honey, zucchini, green beans, cabbage, bananas, papayas, yogurt, basil, garlic and rosemary.
Force contains no by-products, extra salts or sugars, artificial colors or flavors, and no chemical preservatives.

Fromm Dog Food is Great for dogs and cats …http://www.frommfamily.com/ $42- $45 per 30 lb bag
NO fillers….some good quality grains….NO corn….gluten or by-products or wheat
ALL human grade food….fruits…veggies and probiotics!!
check it out you wont regret it !
http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/TOTW has a high protein content (not recommeded for non athletic dogs)
Taste of the Wild contains Ethoxyquin which is a toxic fish preservative. (TOTW says that the cooking process kills all of it but it scared me away from their product)
around $42 for a 30 lb bag …. its the cheapest 6 star food ..
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ lots of great dog food choices on this site !!
Orijen is great but it is $60 – $80 for a 30 lb bag…high protein as well ..not good for non athletic dogs
Fromm Is what my puppy gets it has a lower protein % and great ingredients! 5 outta 6 stars due to lower protein (but most dogs should not have high protein levels …. It makes their kidneys work overtime for no reason)
You can get it online and if you go to the website you can find stores near you .. they wont be at walmarts and the like… they are in feed stores .. Agway..tractor supply stores etc
IF your dog is not going to be a hard working/agility dog all this high protein can do more harm than good in the long run,,, you wont notice it now but it can take its toll on a dogs kidneys as it ages.

( canned unsweetened, unspiced plain ole pumpkin)( not the pie filling tho) you can get it anywhere.IT is also great for diarrhea and constipation.
