Is Orijen dog food as good or better than wellness? ?
June 30th, 2009
I just took my dog to the vet and he has a very sensitive system. He has allergies and so she recommended wellness dog food. I went to the local pet store and the owner said that orijen dog food is even better because the ingredients are better and there are no grains. What do you guys think?
I had him on beneful because I had thought that it was a good dog food but because my dog has a sensitive stomach with allergies my vet told me to gradually switch to something of higher quality.
I think it depends on what kind of dog you have. Orijen is an excellent food with ingredients that are, possibly, superior to those in Wellness, as the pet store owner suggested. I know that Dogfoodanalysis.com gives Orijen six stars, and some of the Wellness foods also.
However, Orijen’s protein content is higher than Wellness’s. If you have a large-breed dog, that’s a good thing and you might want to go with Orijen. Both my vet and my breeder, however, strongly suggested that I keep my dogs away from food with a protein content higher than 25% (I have border collies, a medium sized breed).
Ultimately, both foods are excellent. If you really want to pick just one, I suggest taking into account your dog’s size and its level of exercise as the best way to determine which food is better.

Wellness is grain-free… last time I read up about it.
Hmm…
ADD: I compared ingredients, yes, Orijen *is* a better food, but if your dog is doing just fine on the Wellness, then I wouldn’t recommend switching. But, of course, if you see that she’s developing some reaction to it, then by all means make the switch. But if she’s doing good, then best to leave her be.

Although I personally would prefer the Orijen, really it depends on your particular dog. Each dog is different, and what would be a great food for one dog might be horrible for another.
For example, Evo is another highly recommended food with a good ingredient list, but it made my Chili itchy. So obviously it is not the right food *for her*.

I think the Orijen looks like a better food, however, they are both high quality. My dogs are both on Canidae and have been having problems with gas since the new formula. I’m trying to decide between Orijen and Solid Gold to try them on now.
I agree with Nekais Nemesis…if your dog does ok on the Wellness, there is definitely no need to swtich.

There’s no such thing as a "high quality" dog food or a dog food that is "good" for your dog. All dog food is incinerated (they call it cooking) twice depleting all the nutrients found in raw meat that are essential to your dog’s well being (which is why all dog foods are flooded with vitamins). The best food for any animal is the diet to which it evolved to eat, in this case raw meat, organ, and bone. I suggest calling a butcher and seeing if feeding a raw natural diet is possible (expense wise) for you if not some companies are making dehydrated raw foods which are what I would call "high quality" as far as packaged foods go. Good luck, hope I helped!

I feed my 9 1/2 month husky Orijen and i also feed my cats it too..
I know your question is about dogs.. buuut i know my bengal has a really sensitive tummy and i originally had her on Wellness. She seemed to not really care for it and still had the poops, so then a woman at work told me about Orijen and I’ve been feeding my animals it ever since. My bengal loves it, as well as my other two kitties and my bengal hasn’t had poops in over a year now. My husky has been on it since i brought him home.
I personally would choose Orijen over wellness but they’re both very good quality.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:50 amIf you already have him on wellness you could buy the little 2 dollar bags of Orijen and give him kibbles as a treat and see how he does it it?

Orijen is grain free and the main line of wellness is not grain free.
Wellness core is the grain free line if you are looking for good quality at a reasonable price.
Either one you chose, you cant really go wrong.
